When your body has adapted to being barefoot, your body is better balanced.  All the muscles from your feet to your abs and back work together.  A balanced body is resistant to injuries and athletically stronger.

One thing to realize is that when choosing the barefoot lifestyle you have to prepare for it and work into it slowely.  If you have worn shoes your whole life with elevated heals and lots of fake technology meant to impress you into buying a shoe, you need to work into the barefoot lifestyle slowly.  It is common for people to get excited and get a pair of Vibram Five Fingers and try to run their normal mileage that they have been doing with more main stream shoes.  This can cause a lot of strain on your achilles tendon, calf muscles, and can also put more pressure on the bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles in your foot than you aren't used to. Here is a video showing you what to do to prepare yourself for the barefoot lifestyle.  Also on top of this don't overdo it your first week in minimalist shoes.
